Clara Bow’s Fight for a Second Chance

When Clara Bow arrived at Pasco County Animal Services, she was barely alive.

The 9-year-old mixed breed was found lying on her side, severely emaciated, dehydrated, and too weak to stand. She weighed just 27 pounds—nearly half of what she should have weighed—and was suffering from painful skin infections, severe ear infections in both ears, and conjunctivitis in both eyes. Her body was covered in parasites, and she was dangerously anemic.

Despite everything she had endured, Clara Bow’s gentle spirit was impossible to ignore.

Our team at Runaways Animal Rescue knew we couldn’t turn our backs on her. She deserved a chance to heal, to feel safe, and to finally experience the love every dog deserves.

Clara Bow’s recovery was not easy. As she began treatment, additional testing revealed Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, requiring specialized veterinary care, dermatology treatments, medications, and months of patient monitoring. Her progress was slow at first, but thanks to dedicated veterinary care, a loving foster home, and the incredible support of our community, Clara Bow continued to fight.

Little by little, she began to heal.

Her skin started to recover. Her coat began growing back. She gained weight and strength, and the sweet personality that had been buried beneath illness and neglect began to shine through.

Today, Clara Bow is healthy, safe, and thriving.

After everything she has endured, she is finally ready for the one thing she has never truly had—a loving forever home.

Clara Bow survived unimaginable hardship, and her story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of rescue animals and the life-changing impact of compassion.

Gideon: The Office Cat Who Refused to Give Up

Some animals arrive quietly and pass through rescue quickly on their way to a new home.

Gideon was never going to be one of those animals.

Gideon came to Runaways Animal Rescue as a transfer from Pasco County Animal Services. When he arrived, it was clear he had already lived a hard life. The 7-year-old cat carried the marks of his past — scars, missing toes, one eye that wandered off in its own direction, and a body that had clearly endured more than most cats should.

He was also FIV positive, which meant he would need a committed indoor home and an adopter willing to understand his unique needs.

But Gideon had something else, too: personality.

From the moment he arrived, he confidently claimed his spot in the rescue office, deciding that paperwork, desks, and office chairs all belonged to him. What started as a temporary stay quickly turned into something more permanent as Gideon became our unofficial “office cat.” For nearly a year, he greeted staff, supervised daily rescue operations, and made it his mission to nap on the most important documents he could find.

Behind the scenes, however, Gideon’s journey was far from easy.

He struggled with ongoing health issues that took months to properly diagnose and treat. Because of these complications, he wasn’t able to be listed for adoption right away. Our team worked patiently with veterinarians to help him recover and give him the stability he needed before he could begin searching for a home of his own.

Just as things finally seemed to be improving and Gideon was ready to meet potential adopters, another crisis struck.

Late one evening, Gideon went into urinary blockage — a life-threatening emergency for cats. He was rushed to the veterinary hospital where doctors were able to unblock him and stabilize him. But Gideon, true to his chaotic nature, had other plans. After removing his catheter overnight, he quickly re-blocked and had to be rushed back for emergency treatment.

Over the following weeks, Gideon endured multiple hospital visits, catheter placements, and careful monitoring. Despite everyone’s best efforts, the blockages kept returning. Ultimately, veterinarians determined that the only way to save his life and prevent further suffering was to perform a Perineal Urethrostomy (PU) surgery — a major procedure that creates a new urinary opening to prevent future blockages.

It was a difficult decision, but one that gave Gideon the best chance at a healthy future.

Thanks to the dedication of our veterinary partners and the incredible support of our community, Gideon made it through surgery and began his recovery. The process wasn’t easy, but Gideon proved once again that he was a fighter.

Today, the once-fragile office cat has turned a corner.

Gideon is now recovering in a foster-to-adopt home where he is finally able to relax, heal, and enjoy the quiet comforts of a real home environment. While he will always have his quirks — his dramatic walk, his mischievous personality, and his tendency to supervise everything happening around him — he is also affectionate, loving, and deeply devoted to the people he trusts.

After everything he has endured, Gideon finally has the chance to live the life he deserves.

From a battered survivor at animal services, to the beloved “office goblin” of our rescue, to a cat fighting through medical emergencies with incredible resilience — Gideon’s story is a reminder of why rescue work matters.

Some animals simply refuse to give up.

And Gideon is one of them.

Sunshine: From the Side of the Road to a Second Chance

When Sunshine was found, she was barely holding on.

The young dog had collapsed on the side of the road—severely emaciated, weak, and in desperate need of help. She was exhausted and malnourished, her small body showing clear signs that she had been struggling to survive for far too long.

Thankfully, Sunshine’s story didn’t end there.

She was brought into the care of Runaways Animal Rescue, where she finally had the chance to rest, receive medical attention, and begin the long road toward recovery. While her condition was serious and her healing would take time, Sunshine quickly showed everyone around her just how strong and resilient she truly was.

From the very beginning, her gentle and affectionate personality shined through.

Once placed in a loving foster home, Sunshine began to rediscover the simple joys of being a dog. She enjoyed her first much-needed bath, started gaining weight with proper nutrition, and began exploring her foster home and yard with growing curiosity. Each day she grew a little stronger, a little healthier, and a little more confident.

But perhaps the most special thing about Sunshine is her loving heart.

Her foster family quickly discovered that Sunshine is a true cuddle bug—happiest when she’s curled up next to her people, soaking up affection and companionship. After everything she endured, all she wants is the comfort of being close to someone who cares.

Sunshine’s journey has also brought the community together in incredible ways. Supporters rallied to help fund her medical care, and local partners even hosted creative fundraisers to give her the resources she needed to heal.

Her story is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, compassion can change everything.

From a dog found collapsed and alone on the side of the road, Sunshine is now surrounded by love, safety, and hope—and her second chance is only just beginning.
